This Is My Story

Hi I'm Katie!🌊
I have no idea what I'm doing with my life and everyday is a new adventure. I used to think I had it all figured out...hahaha sike. I didn’t grow up thinking I’d be a "real" photographer. Although I almost went to school for photography, I actually built my career as a Registered Dietitian, working in pediatrics, sports nutrition, hospitals and community outreach. That was my plan moving to Okinawa as well. Stable, meaningful, science-backed.
But the island and the job market (or lack thereof) had other ideas. I struggled with pausing the career I had worked so hard for. But I was reminded what a former physician shared that shifted my perspective.
He told me, “I spent my whole life helping people, working hard, saving for retirement.
But what no one tells you is: what if you don’t have your health or ability to enjoy it later? Work will always be there, finances will change, but adventures and moments with loved ones are what truly matter. Take them now, while you can.” He proceed to make me promise I wouldn't pass an opportunity for adventure and travel. Not thinking too much about it I said "Absolutely, I promise!"
What started as a “side quest” quickly became the adventure I didn’t know I needed.
One that wove my love for people, storytelling, and the water into something much bigger than me.Photography has been a part of my life for over a decade.
Fun fact: I used to work in Portrait & Wedding Photography on the side. But underwater photography feels much different. It’s not just about taking a picture, it’s about sharing a story. A maternity shoot that feels like magic floating in the shallows. A diver’s first breath underwater captured forever in a frame. A couple’s laughter suspended between air and sea in a split shot. These aren’t just photos; they’re little time capsules of what it feels like to be alive, here and now, in the ocean.
Through Nautical Nomads, I’ve built a space where art, adventure, and ocean conservation meet. I teach and guide scuba and snorkel tours that are as safe as they are inspiring. I capture portraits that are as bold as they are personal. I design reels and images that help brands tell ocean stories with authenticity.
I guess you could say I help people see the ocean the way I do and not just as a backdrop, but as a living, breathing character in their story. This is my twist on photography: it’s not about keeping my camera dry, it’s about diving all the way in.
If you’re ready for something different, something saltier, wilder, more meaningful, let’s create your story together.
