When I first moved to Okinawa, I thought my work would be different. What I didn’t realize was that the island would reshape my life.
Living here isn’t just about turquoise water and postcard-perfect beaches — though there are plenty of those. It’s about slowing down, embracing the tides, and learning to value moments in a way most people only enjoy while on vacation or in retirement.
The Island Pace of Life
Okinawa has its own rhythm. Things don’t always move as fast as I was used to, and at first, that was frustrating. But over time, I realized this slower pace is a gift. It allows you to notice the details around you. The sound of waves against the seawall, the colors of a sunset that seems to last forever, the smile of a local shop owner who remembers your face.
Community and Connection
What surprised me most about Okinawa was the community. Whether it’s fellow divers, photographers, or locals at the market, most people here take the time to connect. That sense of belonging has shaped not just my personal life but also my work as a photographer and scuba instructor.
Lessons From the Ocean
The ocean teaches you patience and humility. Some days, the water is calm and inviting; other days, it reminds you who’s in charge. Diving almost daily has taught me that you can’t control everything — but you can choose how you show up, breathe, and adapt. That lesson has carried into every part of my life.... Although, I do have to constantly remind myself or have a friend remind me.
Why These Lessons Matter
Photography and scuba diving are how I share Okinawa’s story with others, but the real story is what the island gives back: perspective. It has reminded me that moments are fleeting, that adventures matter more than possessions, and that joy is often found in the simplest places — between the waves.
